Wedding Ideas Magazine Article: Make Sure Your 2014 Wedding is Bang on Trend With These Wonderful Theme Ideas

We’re always amazed at how wedding themes alter and morph into something new and different. So let’s take a look to find out what’s going to be bang on trend for 2014…

Bring the outside in

Royal weddings often spark off a whole host of new ideas and one which we have to thank Prince William and Kate Middleton for is the whole theme of bringing the outdoors inside. Think of the aisle at Westminster Abbey, which was turned into a forest pathway with the addition of real trees in full leaf.

That’s something Andy Williams and Heather Fulker of Essential Couture are being asked for more and more: “We’re noticing a very strong trend for bringing the garden inside,” says Andy. “Couples are taking inspiration from pretty blossom trees, natural branches and wanting this inside their wedding venue to get that outdoor feel. Brides are certainly getting more adventurous with their flowers and décor and they are eager to push the creative boundaries for the wedding reception. Finally, for couples wanting the wow factor when it comes to flowers but who find the price tag is beyond their budget, we suggest high-quality silk flowers which look incredibly realistic but are about 50% cheaper.”

Alternative chairbacks

Decorated chair backs for all the guests, not just the bride and groom and top table, is another top trend. Slip covers and big bows have been around for a while now, but brides are taking tips from US couples and decorating their chair backs with coloured strips of ribbon and panels of lace. It’s not one design or colour to fit all either, the newest look is to alternate your styles so you might have a chair covered in lace contrasting with its neighbour decorated with ribbon. Or if you just want to use ribbons then use a rainbow of colours or opt an ombre effect. We’d say that if you’re DIY-ing your wedding then chair backs are an easy aspect to decorate yourself.

A touch of glamour

A few years ago, Swarovski crystals were only known to a select few but now crystals are becoming a really popular decorative theme. Wedding stationery experts Intricate Creations agree: “Glamour is a hot theme for 2014, in form of crystals – and lots of them. Clients are noticing that when differently sized crystals are placed together it can dramatically transform a very simple design to a glamorous work of art.”

If you’ve chosen crystals for your wedding stationery, make sure you continue the theme by having crystals on your wedding dress, shoes and scattered over the tables. Sparky lace is actually one of the hottest trends for wedding dresses going forwards into the new year.

Save the last dance for me

The music you choose for your wedding reception will play a bit part in your wedding theme and you’re probably planning to start the evening with the classic ‘first dance’ together as man and wife. Although the theme of a first dance is also changing as DJ Mark van den Berg of Mighty Fine Entertainment explains: “We are noticing that more and more clients are requesting a last dance song as well as their first dance song,” says Mark.

Grooms with two left feet needn’t worry about their first dance as Zoe Puliston, of Forever First Dance Company adds: “We’ve certainly noticed a big sway towards more romantic simple dance and couples are moving away from the funny or gimmicky dances that have been popular for the last few years. Now it’s less about putting on a show and more about dancing together to your favourite song.”

Small and intimate

Couples are getting more confident of doing things their way rather than the traditional style and this is also noticeable in the way guests are entertained. The team at The Manor Somerset says: “We are noticing a mood for more intimate weddings with couples willing to spend a larger amount per head but keeping the numbers low. People are also expressing an interest in almost rustic cuisine for the wedding menu, including gourmet-style fish and chips with Champagne.”

This mood for quieter, smaller dos is also trickling through to the hen night. Not every girl wants a raucous evening and more and more brides are opting for a ladylike theme for their hen party. Options like an afternoon gossiping over a delicious, lavish tea with the girls are becoming more and more popular.

Festival fun

Festival-themed weddings are becoming more and more of a hot theme for 2014. This type of thing is perfect if the bride is rocking a boho look and the groom isn’t the type to wear a formal morning suit. Couples are holding the wedding reception in a marquee, complete with festival flags outside, or maybe even a yurt. Bowl food is a popular choice for this type of wedding theme and the bride and groom may even ask the local restaurant to cater. And some friends can camp out overnight alongside the reception, let’s just hope that wellies and umbrellas aren’t needed! Here’s how to get the look with some details from the Wedding Ideas Shop.

Just remember whatever theme you choose, it should reflect you as a couple. It’s your day – so make it personal to you and don’t feel you have to follow a fashion. Why not talk about this on the Wedding Ideas Forum with other brides to be, to see what trends they have noticed?
