It’s not very often we every day folk get a chance to experience the opulence of being a Lord or Lady or indeed Earl and Countess, but this is exactly the experience you will have with a wedding at the incredible Highclere Castle, home to Downton Abbey. Downton Abbey was first aired on ITV in the United Kingdom as part of the Masterpiece Classic anthology. Four series have been made so far; but fans will be delighted to know that a fifth is planned for 2014!
Highclere Castle itself is beautiful and has been called a real life relic so our very own Mr Mighty Fine (Mark) was delighted when he was given the opportunity to provide music and production services for a wedding held there for Jennifer and Henri.
The building was designed by Sir Charles Barry, the architect of the Houses of Parliament and has been described as the finest occupied Victorian mansion in England. The options with regards to your wedding, ceremony and reception are endless with striking State rooms from the Library to the Drawing Room, the Smoking Room, the Music Room and finally the Saloon with its 50 feet high vaulted roof. Then you have one thousand acres of landscaped 18th century parkland designed by ‘Capability Brown’ to enjoy with your guests.
I also love the fact that Highclere Castle was the seat of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who in 1922 , famously discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun with his colleague Howard Carter, the venue even offers guests the option to have a guided tour of his Egyptian Antiquities within the Castle Cellars during the Reception!
Jennifer and Henri decided to have their wedding party in the Gallery and Mark had a wonderful time creating a dramatic atmosphere by his clever use of uplighting and choice of equipment to blend into the space. The one thing that we are very mindful of at Mighty Fine is making sure that we compliment a space in terms of our set up choices, especially when we are working within such an old building.
Highclere castle is a wonderful venue to visit and even if you haven’t chosen Highclere as your wedding venue you can still enjoy events such as the Battle Proms Picnic Concerts with an uplifting orchestra, acts and attractions and an awe inspiring firework display, definitely worth a visit if you get a chance.
